3D printed Tritanium technology biologic fixation

Tritanium is manufactured from commercially-pure titanium and is a highly porous biologic fixation surface, which closely resembles the structure of cancellous bone1. Stryker’s 3D printing technology allows for this titanium powder to be applied in numerous layers and provides a complex porous structure in appropriate areas of the implant. This allows for strategic positioning of the porous metal matrix in desired zones for greater fixation in the proximal portion of the bone, while avoiding the distal areas that could potentially cause stress shielding.

Cementless designs with features that aid in initial implant stability have been show to provide durable long-term results2; the Triathlon Tritanium baseplate features a keel and four (4) bullet cruciform pegs to reduce micromotion and liftoff3,4. The depth and placement of these pegs was optimised by using the SOMA database, Stryker’s unique population-based orthopaedic design environment­5. The addition of these pegs are intended to provide more purchase into the outermost, dense cancellous bone and support patients with compromised bone quality.
